If you're planning to host a public film screening in India—whether it’s in a college, café, cultural venue, film society, or under the open sky—film licensing is not just an option, it's a legal requirement. In this blog, we’ll break down everything you need to know about film licensing in India, how it works, and why it’s important.
What is Film Licensing?
Film licensing is the legal process of acquiring the rights to screen a film publicly. It ensures that the copyright owner—be it a production house, distributor, or independent filmmaker—is compensated for the use of their content.
There are different types of film licenses, but for most public screenings outside a cinema hall, what you need is the Public Performance Rights (PPR).

🔑 Types of Film Licenses
Public Performance Rights (PPR) – Mandatory for non-theatrical screenings (i.e., not via regular cinemas).
Theatrical Rights – For commercial screenings through cinema chains (requires different licenses and clearances).
Digital Streaming Rights – For online or OTT usage (not applicable to public screenings).
